Abstract

Insecticides are chemicals that are used to control damage or annoyance from insects. Generally, control is achieved by poisoning the insects by oral ingestion of stomach poisons, by contact poisons that penetrate through the cuticle, or by fumigants that penetrate through the respiratory system. Pojurowsky Leon has made wall paper washproof and contact‐insecticidal coating compositions by addition of 1–12% insecticide solutions in polar organic solvents in 15–45% amounts by usual vinyl‐acrylic or oil type emulsion lacquers. Coating dye compositions dispersible, in water and containing (MeO)2P(O)CH(OH)CC13 with lasting insecticide effect were prepared by Bozzay Jazsel, et al. In 1986, Lee, et al, have performed aqueous emulsions of insecticidal activity, containing hydrophilic silicone organic copolymer elastomer. Recently Moustafa, M., et al prepared and evaluated various coating compositions for their insecticidal activity. The binders used are chlorinated rubber, polyurethane and alkyd resins. Three kinds of insecticides with trade names sumicidin, sumithion and cyanox were studied. Cockroaches were the target insect. They showed that compositions based on alkyd or chlorinated rubber and containing 4% cyanox or sumithion as insecticide showed promising results as insecticidal and insect repellent coatings.

Abstract

Various polyesteramide resins are prepared in which a stoichiometric amount of hydroxy ethyl fatty acid amides (diol) are replaced by the bifunctional nicotinic acid and aisonicotinic acid derivatives of diethanolamine and triethanolamine without affecting the resin constants. The inclusion of nicotinyl and isonicotinyl residues would expect to prevent microbial growth and may also act as corrosion inhibitor.

Various rosin‐modified polyesteramide resins are formulated and evaluated for their insecticidal activity. Five kinds of pyrethroid and organophosphorus insecticides with trade names Neo‐Pynamin Forte, Gokilaht, Neo‐Pynamin, Sumithrin and Cyanox are studies. Abstract

Rosin‐modified polyesteramide resins are prepared covering a wide range of oil lengths by partial replacement of hydroxy ethyl fatty acid amides employed in resin formulations by rosin‐diethanolamine derivative without affecting the resin constants. This is followed by a study of the optimum amount of modifier which improve the resins performance and durability without affecting the other properties. Optimum modifier concentration and durability characteristics are then determined.

Abstract

Cobalt, Nickel and Copper hexaazabiphthalocyanine were prepared by the reaction of pyridine 2,3‐dicarboxylic acid anhydride, pyromillitic acid dianhydride, with urea and metal salt in presence of ammonium molybdate catalyst. The reaction is carried out in an inert solvent [nitrobenzene]. The structure of the prepared compound was confirmed by microanalytical and pectrophotometric methods. Evaluation of the highly coloured products according to international standard methods showed their suitability as excellent pigments for coating applications.

Abstract

Purpose

Paper aims to Preparation and evaluation of isoxazole benzene sulfonamide derivatives and incorporated it with waterborne household paints to develop coating compositions as an insecticidal coating against Musca domestica adults.

Design/methodology/approach

The synthesized compounds were prepared and confirmed by different analyzes, fourier transform infra-red (FTIR), mass, proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1HNMR) and Carbon 13 nuclear magnetic resonance (13CNMR) spectra. The prepared compound has been blended with waterborne household paint formulation, the physical and mechanical properties of the paint formulation has been studied. The efficiency of the isoxazole benzene sulfonamide derivatives when incorporated with waterborne paint against Culex quinquefasciatus and Mosquito house fly adults, also have been examined.

Findings

The obtained results of the paint formulations confirmed their best performance and providing good scrub resistance. Also, the finding promising results of the insecticide test of the paint formulation may be because of the biological activity of these compounds and containing sulfonamide, cyanide and free aromatic amine groups comparing with the standard recommended organophosphorus insecticide. The order activity increase with increasing the dose concentration of the isoxazole derivatives and the activity of chemical compounds itself is represented in terms of their medium lethal concentrations LC50 (LC90), which recorded 0.90(1.62), 0.89(1.61) and 0.86(1.56) g/ml for 5, 3 and 4 chemical compounds, respectively, after 72 h from treatment.

Practical implications

These types of organic compounds are friendly environmentally and can be used as a biocide with different types of paint formulations.

Originality/value

Insecticide waterborne household paints based on isoxazole benzene sulfonamide derivatives as insecticide agents are novel.

The Travel and Tourism sector is continuously changing over the years. Indeed, a wide range of interests has been evidenced worldwide. Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, tourists have experienced a drastic change in their expectations and necessities, demanding new kinds of services added value, among other variables. Uncertainty and COVID-conscious tourists remain evidenced after postpandemic recovery. Moreover, domestic, eco and digital tourism grow exponentially due to the current trends. The public and private sectors must understand the tourists' patterns and adapt their strategies to help the sector recover. Thus, by working together, tourism, despite being affected by COVID-19, regained its strength and continues to grow, inviting local and international tourists to travel to different destinations, adding the adaptation of those who offer services in this industry to meet the expectations of new trends and consumer behaviors.

Abstract

Purpose

This study aims to investigate the mediating role of management control system (MCS) characteristics in the relationship between state type, reflected through societal institutions (SIs), and two sets of management accounting techniques (MATs), namely, performance measurement techniques (PMTs) and cost measurement techniques (CMTs).

Design/methodology/approach

Structural equation modeling was used to analyze data from a cross-sectional survey of 136 firms in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Findings

The findings show a direct positive impact of state-type construct on MCS characteristics, and that MCS characteristics partially mediate the reported significant relationships between state type and the use of PMTs. While the findings show a similar positive relationship between state type and CMTs, MCS characteristics do not mediate this relationship.

Research limitations/implications

Although these results are affected by limitations associated with the survey method used, they are useful in explaining the necessary conditions supporting the use of MATs in general and performance measurement techniques in particular.

Practical implications

The study uses a cross-section of companies in the UAE, an attractive global investment destination, as its sample. The results can help investors better understand the choice of MATs in the UAE and its relation to MCS characteristics.

Originality/value

This study contributes to management accounting literature by determining the mediating role of MCS characteristics on the relationship between state type and the choice of two sets of MATs, whereas existing literature assumes a direct relation between the two.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of corporate governance mechanisms on the financial performance of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) listed firms.

Design/methodology/approach

Relying on a sample of 95 UAE listed firms affiliated to financial and non‐financial sectors, the paper performs a cross‐section regression analysis to test whether there is a significant relationship between governance mechanisms (voluntary disclosure, CEO duality, board size, board committee and audit type) and UAE firms' performance while controlling for firm size, industry type, firm listing years and leverage. The paper relies on data published on year 2008 and utilizes the accounting‐based measures of Return on Assets (ROA), Return on Equity (ROE) as well as the market measure (Tobin's Q) in order to measure the UAE firms' financial performance.

Findings

The empirical results show that voluntary disclosure, CEO duality and board size are significantly influencing the UAE accounting‐based performance measure, while none of the governance variables significantly affects firms' market performance measure. The results also reveal that firm size is the only control variable that significantly influences firms' performance. This paper provides evidence showing that the accounting‐based performance measures are more objective in the years where unstable economic conditions exist.

Practical implications

The paper's findings indicate that the underlying principles of corporate governance are applicable in emerging markets. The findings are important to regulators, investors, managers, and researchers aiming at developing new policies that establish better regulatory infrastructure that increases investors' confidence and attracting foreign investment.

Originality/value

The paper is one of very few studies that examine the relationship between corporate governance and firms' financial performance under economic turbulent in an emerging market economy, the UAE.
